2 Timothy 4:3-4 “For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.”
Most Christians immediately get their defenses up when the word “evolution” comes up. After all, we believe that man was created, not evolved. But before writing off those who claim to believe in evolution, we should first ask the question: “What do you mean by evolution?” Although most theologians agree that Darwin’s idea that man somehow evolved from a lower life form and was not, indeed, created from the “dust” of the earth, the term “evolution” is not always used in the same context. In fact, there are 3 definitions. Knowing which one you are talking about is essential because two of them in no way contradict what scripture teaches. Only one is a real threat – not because it is true, but because it is so widely believed that it keeps people from accepting the truth of the gospel. If an evolutionist asks you if you believe that things ‘change over time’ (definition one), of course they do! If they say that species over time have been noted to adapt and change due to environmental conditions or some other cause (called “microevolution”) that is clearly observable and true without a doubt. But if they say you come from a monkey (“macroevolution”)…feel free to draw the line.
Pray: “Dear Heavenly Father, as time goes on you continue to reveal the wonder of your creation to us. In Jesus’ matchless name, never let us allow some man-made theory to cause us to doubt or lose confidence in the truth of your holy word. When something doesn’t line up, the error is not with you but with our understanding – Amen.”
Genesis 1:27 “So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”
Genesis 2:7 “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”
If naturalistic evolution is true, and God had no hand in the creation of man but we just climbed out of some primordial ooze millions of years ago and after changing from one thing to another finally became a human being, there are certain consequences or logical results of such a belief. To begin with, man would have no value…well, at least we would be no more valuable than a cow or mosquito or an armadillo. After all, everything that exists came into being the same way. Somewhere down the prehistoric chemical highway we turned right, other things turned left, and some just stayed put resulting in different things. But regardless of the path, we all would have evolved and so nothing would be any more valuable than anything else. Christians accept that man has greater value than other things because we are created in the image of God. Nothing else in God’s creation can make that claim. In addition, if we evolved, we have no soul. Since evolution is a purely physical process, it can in no way create something that is other than physical. Consequently, physical death is truly the end. We will never think another thought. It’s hard to deny, though, that there absolutely are things about our life that are ‘immaterial’.
Pray: “Father, I know I am far more than just a body. Evolution cannot explain a soul. In your Son’s powerful name, thank you, for creating me with a value above all other created things because you made me in your image and giving me a soul that will live on beyond this human form – Amen.”
Genesis 2:15-17 “The Lord God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to tend and watch over it.  But the Lord God warned him, “You may freely eat the fruit of every tree in the garden—except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you eat its fruit, you are sure to die.”
If natural evolution is true, another logical conclusion of this belief is that there is no such thing as free will. What we ‘mistakenly’ think of as free will isn’t really free will at all. Free will is not a physical thing so it cannot have ‘evolved’. For evolutionists, it is something akin to the instincts with which animal’s act. We act purely based on either survival or desire. We don’t actually control what we do. If this were true, we would be no more responsible for our actions than animals. Following this idea forward, we must then conclude that if we are evolved beings, the idea of a standard of morality would be absurd. Evolution has no way to create a standard of right and wrong since morality is not a physical thing. Only a transcendent God would be capable of determining if actions could be considered right or wrong since they could be compared to the standard he creates. The idea in society today called ‘relativism’ goes hand in hand with the evolutionary model. It says that each of us determine what is right or wrong for ourselves. The danger of this should be obvious. But macroevolution leaves you no other choice.
Pray: “Lord God, you clearly gave us free will because it was your wish that we choose you over ourselves. The knowledge we gained from the fall assures us that there is both good and evil, and so, right and wrong. In your Son’s holy name, help us to have the wisdom to speak against this idea of relativism which is causing our society to degenerate into the depths of sin leading to inevitable destruction – Amen.”
Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 “That’s the whole story. Here now is my final conclusion: Fear God and obey his commands, for this is everyone’s duty. God will judge us for everything we do, including every secret thing, whether good or bad.”
The final great casualty of the teaching of evolution is life itself. If God does not exist, if we are only evolved creatures, then life has no meaning. If I believe I have no more value than any other creature, then my life can have no more meaning than that of a buzzard or a snail. If I have no soul, then how will I live my life when I realize that when I die that is it? Wouldn’t it be better to live life with reckless abandon, selfish in every way (not caring about others at all) so that I can get the most out of this short existence before I disappear into nothingness? If I have no free will, then I don’t really pick and choose for myself. Not only does life have no meaning but I have no control or say over any of it. Finally, if there really is no right or wrong, then the good things I do are pointless and the bad things I do really don’t matter either. Mankind has always pondered the meaning of life. Do you think animals do that? The very fact that we consider it, search for it, is a clue that there is an answer.
Pray: “Heavenly Father, thank you for creating me with purpose. We have not only a purpose but a glorious destiny in you. In the name of my blessed Lord and Savior, keep me ever mindful that nothing I do is without meaning and so nothing I do will not be judged – Amen.”
Psalm 139:13-14 “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.”
There are two main problems with the idea of macroevolution the way it is presented and argued between evolutionists and creationists. The first is the way most evolutionists support their position for macroevolution is by simply saying “Evolution is a fact (referring to microevolution) therefore evolution is true (meaning macroevolution).” This is a mistake in thinking referred to as a fallacy of equivocation. Like saying “Jesus is God” therefore “Jesus is triune”. It is flawed logic. The second problem is evolutionists conclude that macroevolution is simply a continuation of microevolution just over a really long (and unobservable) period of time. Unfortunately, just because microevolution is true (for example, some species develop longer beaks, different colors or change diets) it does not immediately follow that macroevolution (that amphibians, like frogs, evolved into reptiles…like alligators) is therefore true. One does not prove the other. The truth is there is countless empirical data that establishes the fact of microevolution but no substantial scientific proof for macroevolution…at all. Though many intelligent evolutionists choose to exercise their ‘free will’ and deny God, the evidence is in and it says that you and I are “fearfully and wonderfully made”. We are, in fact, the pinnacle of God’s creation (Genesis 1:26-28).
Pray: Lord God, send teachers who can enlighten your church to the true nature of things and give them both the wisdom and courage to engage our society which is being misled by false teachings. In Jesus’ mighty name, let those of us who know the truth feel the burden to share the truth and to do so both with lovingkindness and conviction – Amen.
